HARRISON, NJ(SMI-WOMEN-SPORTS, 04.23.22)-The Gotham NJ/NY FC concluded its pre-season training with a 1-1, draw against the Orlando Pride in final game of the 2022 Challenge Cup tournament, finishing third with six points in NWSL/East group A standings at the RedBulls Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
New York, who will open its 2022 NWSL season away against the Orlando Pride as well on May 01, at the Exploria Stadium in Orlando, played a very tight game in the first half with both teas creating counter-attacks through the sideline corners that were very effective and both teams scoring a goal a piece at the half.
The visitors opened the score first through Gunnhildur Jónsdóttir with a header at the 9' minute, when Angharad James served a corner kick inside the penalty box finding Jónsdóttir who headed it back into the net to put Orlando 1-0, over Gotham very early in the game.
New York bounced back and found the equalizer with a penalty kick by Kristie Mewis at 45' minute, when Ifeoma Onumonu was brought down inside the box and Mewis tied the game at 1-1, when she executed perfect left-footed to right-side goalpost.
In the second half, both teams picked-up where they left off and had numerous opportunities to go ahead in the score but most of the shots went wide or over the goals crossbar to end the game in a 1-1, draw.
