Femmy Honoree - BRAND EVOLUTION AWARD - Accepting Kerry O’Brien, CEO, Founder, Designer, of COMMANDO
Commando is a design philosophy born of innovation. Founded by Kerry O’Brien, a sixth-generation Vermonter and member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), the brand pushes the boundaries of design and ingenuity with the singular belief that comfort is the catalyst for confidence. We do this through an obsession with fabric and fit, and by relentlessly reimagining what can be. We don’t choose fabrics, we anoint them. With women’s wants and needs at the core of every decision we make, fabrics need to work harder to earn their Commando name. It is this love of fabric and innate desire to innovate that has earned us 2 design patents.
From our revolutionary raw-cut underwear to today’s finely tuned edit, our product evolution has been exacting and deliberate. Not designing for design sake, we’ve stayed true to our core purpose of engineering well made, awesomely fitting pieces that work harder for her. The look is refined with an edge, crafted through proprietary raw cut silhouettes and elevated fabrications, ingenuity and badassery infused in everything we do. Our design philosophy is simple; How does it feel? How does it fit? How does it look? In that order. We believe you should only wear what you love.
Kerry has always done things differently. After a tenure working in financial public relations in New York City, Kerry shifted her efforts to her next chapter. Revolutionizing her top drawer.
With no background in design, Kerry launched Commando in 2005 with the first seamless, elastic and trim-free undergarments. 20 years later Commando has walked hundreds of red carpets and fashion runways, been featured on dozens of magazine covers … some infamously, and holds two patents for innovative design in hosiery and slips.
Today the brand reaches far beyond her customer’s top drawer and into her closet with a full line of clothing. Her obsession with luxury technical fabrics and unique approach to design has positioned Commando as a trailblazer in the industry which led to her induction into the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) in 2012.
Kerry is a sixth generation Vermonter and resides in Burlington with her husband and three children. Commando can be found in over 500 specialty boutiques and premium retailers including Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue, & Nordstrom
